BECKY DIDN’T EXPECT to see Mike Thomas at the back door, but she waved him in. “You’re around pretty early, especially on a Saturday,” she said, automatically pouring him a cup of coffee. He was a nice-looking man, with a square face and light brown hair. His eyes were kind, and he tended to be shy. She’d always felt bad about the twice he’d asked her out. It was hard to be interested in dating when you were so tired you wanted to cry.

“I brought extra vaccine,” he explained, stepping carefully into the kitchen. Lady trotted in and growled at him.

“Australian shepherd,” the vet said. “Nice breed for herding cattle.” He stood still and let the dog sniff his hand before he moved into the kitchen. “When did you get her?”

Becky handed him the coffee. “She’s not mine. Maude’s son is here for a while and she belongs to him, though lately she’s so attached to Peter I think she’s forgotten who she belongs to.” The dog turned away and left the room, heading toward the den where Peter was watching cartoons on television.

“Thanks.” He sat down at the kitchen table and took a sip. “I heard Maude’s son came home to sell the ranch.”

“That’s what he says, though Maude’s hoping he’ll change his mind.”

“Well, if he’s anything like his uncle, he won’t,” the vet declared.

“I’m afraid I don’t understand your meaning,” Will said, walking into the room. Becky looked up, realizing that Will must have been on the porch long enough to have overheard.

“We were just talking—” she started to say, but Mike had turned toward Will and stood up. The vet stuck out his hand.

“You must be Maude’s son. I’m Mike Thomas, local horse doctor.”

Will had no choice but to shake the man’s hand. “Will Cody. Glad to meet you.”

He didn’t sound glad, Becky noted. In fact, he sounded like he’d had a rough morning and wanted to take it out on someone. Too bad the shy veterinarian was the first man who got in his way. “Want coffee?”

“Sure.”

Lady stuck her head in the kitchen, saw Will and turned around without greeting him. Oh, it’s only you, seemed to be her expression, and Becky smiled as she poured the coffee. Maude was still asleep, and Tommy, tolerating his playpen, was watching cartoons in the den with Peter. Becky put the mug on the table in front of Will and turned to the vet.

“I’ll bet you’ve come to see the Pasos.”

“Yes, that and to see if you needed any medical supplies. And I also wanted to ask you—”

“Mike,” Will interjected, cutting off the man’s words. “What do you know about these Spanish horses my mother has bought?”

Mike turned away from Becky. “Well, they’re supposed to be fine riding horses, from what I’ve heard.”

“I’d like you to look them over, if you don’t mind.”

“Well,” the vet hesitated, looking at Becky who was leaning against the counter watching the men. She smiled, and he said, “Sure, I’ll be glad to have a quick look.
